RIVERHOUNDS® OPEN SEASON WITH WIN

Saturday, April 20 2002

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh RIVERHOUNDS® opened the 2002 season with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Toronto Lynx in front of 2,068 fans at Bethel Park Stadium. Forwards Michael Apple and Phil Karn combined for both goals for the RIVERHOUNDS®.

Karn opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Apple flicked a throw in toward the box (left). Karn one-touched the ball past Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar.

The Lynx, who open the season with eight consecutive games on the road, tied the score in the 40th minute when midfielder David DiPlacido knocked a rebound from forward Irasto Knights past RIVERHOUNDS® net minder Randy Dedini.

Karn and Apple combined again in the 82nd minute when Karn played a through ball to Apple at the top of the penalty box. Apple fired a shot past Zagar into the upper right corner of the goal.

The Lynx had a chance to tie the score in stoppage time at the end of the game when Dedini was caught outside the goal box and midfielder Niki Budalic fired a shot that was knocked away at the last second by defender Tim Sahaydak. The Lynx were unable to capitalize on the rebound.

A very physical game from the outset, the teams registered 50 fouls and eight yellow cards combined.

The Riverhounds started two rookies - midfielders Derek Potteiger and Joey Worthen - in place of several injured regulars. Defender Ricardo Iribarren sat out the game due to a suspension.

The Lynx and Hounds meet again in Pittsburgh on May 31.

The RIVERHOUNDS® return to Bethel Park Stadium on May 8 in a special matinee game designed especially for school students. All tickets are $5. For more information about the RIVERHOUNDS® and tickets, call 412-381-4625 or visit www.riverhounds.com.
