Latest Inferno Releases TWO TORONTO INFERNO SELECTED TO W-LEAGUE SECOND ALL-LEAGUE TEAM By Glenn Sutherland Although they would have preferred reading about an upcoming trip to the W-League’s final four playoff tournament in Vancouver this weekend, two Toronto Inferno soccer players received some good news this week from the United Soccer Leagues’ head office in Tampa, Florida. Goalkeeper Leisha Alcia and midfielder Cindy Walsh found out that they had been selected to the 2002 W-League Second All-League team. Alcia had also been picked to the W-League Team of the Week once during the 2002 season while Walsh received that honour twice! Alcia, who returns to play as a sophomore ‘keeper for the Fighting Illini at the University of Illinois this fall, clearly had her best season of three spent with the Inferno. She played every minute of each game this campaign, chalking up 1100 minutes between the posts while maintaining a stellar 1.00 goals against average. Her nemesis turned out to be the Boston Renegades, who accounted for seven of the 13 goals allowed in 4-0 and 3-1 victories. In her remaining ten games, the Mississauga native recorded four shutouts and only one goal in each of the six other matches. “I still consider Leisha to be the number one goalkeeper in our league. She continued her growth as a goalkeeper and outdid her performances of the previous two seasons,” said Toronto Inferno Head Coach and General Manager of Player Personnel Tony Marmo. With respect to Miss Walsh, who has also stepped on the field for Canada’s national women’s soccer team 20 times, the W-League veteran played in eleven of twelve regular season games during her first year with the Inferno and added four assists along the way. Walsh has momentarily returned to her hometown of Montreal to spend some time with family and friends before heading back to the University of Hartford for her junior season with the Hawks. Walsh, who plays a position that cannot always be measured by scoring statistics, is considered by Marmo to be “a constant in the midfield.” The following are the full W-League First and Second All-League teams: W-League First Team All-League Goalkeeper - Kathy Hoverman - Hampton Roads Piranhas Defender - Elizabeth Baidu - Northern Virginia Majestics Defender - Deanna Kreidel - Charlotte Lady Eagles Defender - Isabel Morneau - Ottawa Fury Midfielder - Jen Kelley - Arizona Heatwave Midfielder - Robin McCullough - Maryland Pride Midfielder - Jessica Reifer - New York Magic Midfielder - Rebekah Splaine - Boston Renegades Forward - Mariel Dominguez - Kansas City Mystics Forward - Laura Kalmari - Boston Renegades Forward - Noelle Meeke - New York Magic W-League Second Team All-League Goalkeeper - Leisha Alcia - Toronto Inferno Defender - Heather Deerin - New Jersey Wildcats Defender- Jen Lewis - Charlotte Lady Eagles Defender - Sandi Potis - Vancouver Breakers Midfielder - Mary Beth Bowie - Boston Renegades Midfielder - Nkiru Okosieme - Charlotte Lady Eagles Midfielder - Keri Sarver - Maryland Pride Midfielder - Cindy Walsh - Toronto Inferno Forward - Kelly Golebiowski - Hampton Roads Piranhas Forward - Tina Murphy - Charlotte Lady Eagles Forward - Laurie Sabado - Arizona Heatwave Despite the 2002 W-League season for the Toronto Inferno coming to an end on August 2nd by way of a playoff loss to Boston, fans may get another chance to see some of them play more outdoor soccer this summer.
