No Ray of Hope for Inferno Match but Yes to
Playoffs
(Toronto, Ont.: July 20, 2002): The Toronto Inferno's first home
match at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough, on Sunday, July 21, 2002, has been
cancelled. The Rhode Island Rays notified Inferno management late Friday
afternoon of their inability to field a squad for the Northern Conference match.
All the points go to the Inferno, who claims their third straight trip to the
W-League's Playoffs.
"Needless to say we are extremely disappointed and
have to apologize for this unforeseen occurrence to our fans," commented Inferno
Business Manager, Paul Shaw. "We were anticipating a good crowd at our first
home match in the GTA region." Previous home Inferno encounters took place in
Burlington due to the City of Toronto work stoppage.
Last weekend, the
Inferno blanked the Rays 9 nil in Rhode Island and were looking for a positive
result on Sunday to secure a playoff berth. "Of course we would have liked to
win on the field. One of our goals was to make the playoffs for a third straight
time. Now we prepare for the next step," says Head Coach Tony Marmo.
Playoffs start in two weeks when the Inferno play at the defending
W-League Champions, the Boston Renegades. Fans get a preview of that match when
the Inferno close out the regular season on Friday July 26th against the
Renegades at Birchmount Stadium. Kick off is at 8:00 PM, for tickets call (905)
