INFERNO SET TEAM RECORDS IN VICTORY OVER RHODE ISLAND RAYS
By Glenn Sutherland

(MONDAY JULY 15, 2002) - The Toronto Inferno established two new franchise records on Sunday afternoon in Rhode Island as they convincingly blanked the Rays 9-0 in W-league soccer play. The resounding victory resulted in the Inferno setting team records for most goals scored in one game and the greatest goals for/goal against differential in a winning effort. The previous marks were set in 2001 when Toronto shut out the Rochester Ravens 8-0 at Rochester’s Growney Stadium.
Tina Blaskovic and Cindy Walsh led the Inferno with two goals apiece while Jo McNish, Emma DiCesare, Tracey Garrison, Stacey Janetos, and Jane Lea added singles. For Blaskovic, the W-1 League’s 2001 goal scoring champion, those two goals give her seven in eleven matches so far in 2002 to lead the team.

“Even though we scored in the first minute, we really did not get off to a good start on Sunday,” said head coach Tony Marmo.

The Inferno did get their game in gear eventually, leading 5-0 at the half en route to a sixth victory in eleven matches. Toronto has also suffered three losses and drawn in two other matches during the 2002 campaign.

The Inferno will try to continue their dominance over the Rays on July 21st when they host Rhode Island.

On Saturday evening Toronto gained some revenge for an earlier loss by recording their fifth victory of the season. The Inferno shut out the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms 2-0 in Keene, New Hampshire to avenge a 1-0 set-back at the same pitch in May. Lea and Blaskovic provided the Inferno scoring.

“I thought we were inconsistent, like a yo-yo” said Marmo

“However, in the end, we got the job done.”

Marmo who also serves as the team’s General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, thought his squad could have easily scored two or three more goals.

“We had many more chances than New Hampshire and also hit a couple of crossbars,” stated Marmo.

For Inferno goalkeeper Leisha Alcia, the shutouts were her third and fourth of the season. The second year veteran now has six in her brief W-League tenure.

In addition to the July 21st match against Rhode Island, the Inferno also has one more regular season on July 26th versus the Northern Division-leading Boston Renegades.
