Kicker hot for Inferno

Kimberly Moore of
North York is on a mission to help turn around the season of professional
soccer's Toronto Inferno after a not-so-torrid start.
The 22-year-old
defender is a rookie on an Inferno team that has started off with a 2-3-1 record
after finishing 10-3-2 last season and making the W-League playoffs for the
second straight year.
Moore, who grew up in North York, said the Inferno
are just working out the kinks of a team that has seen quite a lot of player
turnover in the off-season.
"We need to try and get back into the
playoffs," Moore said. "We need to start bonding as a team and try to create a
little bit more co-operation. There are only three returning players from last
year on the team."
Moore has tried to remain positive during her team's
slow start.
"My strong attitude helps the team pretty well," she said.
"I just need to keep my spirits up and hopefully that will help the team
succeed."
Moore has also been an invaluable defender this season,
according to Tony Marmo, Inferno head coach.
"She's been a pleasant
surprise," Marmo said. "I didn't know anything about her when she was first
called in for practice, but she has been a rock on defence. We just need her to
keep it up."
Marmo said his team's problem hasn't been in keeping the
ball out of its own net, but putting the ball into the net of the opposition.
"We have to score more goals and we got a monkey off our back with four
goals against New Hampshire (a 4-1 victory versus the Lady Phantoms on June
16)," Marmo said. "We have a lot of new players on the squad and it's taking
time for the team to gel."
The Inferno will play against their
arch-rival Ottawa Fury on Saturday.
As a result of the labour disruption
between the city and its outside workers the Inferno's permit to play at
Birchmount Stadium has been suspended for the duration of the strike.
The team has been forced to find temporary sites to play its home games.
