INFERNO BLASKO-VICS PHANTOMS FROM THE FOREST
(Toronto, June
17, 2002): The Toronto Inferno received maximum points yesterday for their 4 to
1 win over the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms at Sherwood Forest in Burlington.
W-League 2001 MVP, Tina Blaskovic led the home side with a 2 goal, 2-assist
first half performance.
The Inferno knew going into the game that a loss
to their Northern Conference rivals would seriously hurt their playoff chances.
The Lady Phantoms had beat the Inferno's provincial rivals the Ottawa Fury the
night before and had edged the Inferno 1 nil in the thier home opener. On a
confident high, the Lady Phantoms would give up 4 first half goals on route to
gaining a weekend split in Ontario.
Blaskovic quickly showed the sparse
crowd at the Forest why she is amongst the top strikers in the league. She
latched on to a through ball and delicately lifted it over the advancing keeper
for her first and then curled a left foot effort back post for her second.
Blaskovic even had a penalty superbly saved before her first half was complete.
Jo McNish and Emma Di Cesare scored the other Inferno goals, both banging in
rebounds from Blaskovic shots. The Lady Phantoms lone goal came on an Inferno
miscue at the back.
The Toronto Inferno competes in United Soccer
League's W-League and is the "Future of Women's Soccer." Next home match is June
29th verses the Ottawa Fury at Birchmount Stadium; kick-off is at
7:30PM.
