Inferno fit to be split on road trip
(May 20, 2002): The
Toronto Inferno won one and lost one on their first away trip this past weekend.
On Friday night, the Inferno wound up on the wrong side of a 1 nil result at the
New Hampshire Lady Phantoms. The squad then rebounded with a solid 3 to 1 win at
the New York Magic on Sunday afternoon.
A new look Inferno took the field
this past weekend led by 2001 W-League MVP Tina Blaskovic. "We are still in the
process of signing players with some to come in from their US colleges,"
commented Inferno Head Coach Tony Marmo. Players were still arriving the night
before departure and one met the team in New Hampshire. Nevertheless, the
refurbished squad battled and dropped the opener to the Lady Phantoms.
In
the second match of their trip, the Inferno got off the mark in the 4th minute
against the Magic and led 2 to 1 at half-time. Jo McNish tallied twice, after
Emma Dicesare scored the early goal on route to the Inferno's first win of the
2002 Season. "Great win for us, we are very different from last year and are
coming together as a team," says Coach Marmo. "Our starting line-up had 6 new
faces, I am extremely happy with how we knocked the ball around this
weekend."
The Toronto Inferno competes in United Soccer League's W-League
and is the "Future of Women's Soccer." Inferno opens their home season with the
Long Island Lady Riders visiting on May 26th at a stadium to be
announced.
