CPSL: London Host Wizards to Kickoff Canada Cup

LONDON CITY HOST WIZARDS TO KICKOFF
CANADA CUP WEEKEND
Five teams bid for trophy at Cove Road,
London
VAUGHAN—Thursday, September 26—London City and Ottawa Wizards will
kickoff the CPSL Canada Cup weekend in a one-game Wild Card encounter at Cove
Road, London tomorrow night to decide who goes through to accompany Brampton
Hitmen, Toronto Croatia and Vaughan Sun Devils to the semi-finals of the
inaugural CPSL Canada Cup the following day.
The CPSL Canada Cup, previously
called the League Cup, was adopted by the CPSL this season to reflect the strong
support of the federal government in the CPSL, Canada’s only complete
professional soccer league which presently operates in Ontario and Quebec but
which has a mandate to expand to Western Canada.
All 14 teams of the CPSL
entered the Canada Cup and games were played from the beginning of the season
through to the final this weekend. The games are independent of the league
schedule and the teams were drawn into a qualifying round, with a home and away
two-game series with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals. Brampton
Hitmen, Ottawa Wizards, Vaughan Sun Devils and Toronto Croatia emerged as the
winners and they were joined by the host team London City. Ottawa Wizards were
drawn against London City for the Wild Card game to decide the fourth berth in
the semi-finals Saturday.
The CPSL Canada Cup is the first of the two major
events near the end of the CPSL season, the second event being the Rogers Cup
playoffs that pit the three top teams from each Conference and the host team
into a playoff format leading to the CPSL Championship final game on October
20.
Favourites to win the CPSL Canada Cup are Ottawa Wizards, winner of the
Eastern Conference and Toronto Croatia, winner of the Western Conference, but
history has shown that in what is expected to be a high-paced exciting weekend
of pro soccer, such an environment disregards the league standings and any team
can come out on top.
