Brampton Hitmen extended their unbeaten streak
in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL) to three games with a pair of
ties with Mississauga Olympians.
Hitmen and Olympians tied 1-1 Saturday
at Victoria Park Stadium. The teams had also met Thursday in Mississauga, with
the same result, a 1-1 tie.
While the Hitmen had opportunities Saturday
the only player to score was Yusif Jamamdo just three minutes into the second
half. Shannon Machedo had the Mississauga goal in the first half.
Paolo
Ceccarelli had a strong game in goalkeeping the Olympians off the board after
that, making some good saves.
Coach Steve Nijjar was pleased to get the
tie, although he naturally would have preferred a victory.
“Everybody
played well, we should have won,’’ he said. “We had opportunities. The players
at the top have to finish.’’
Nijjar said he was happy with the team’s
defensive performance.
“From the back out. Paolo Ceccarelli, the
defenders, the midfielders all played well. The forwards just didn’t score,’’ he
said.
He said the Hitmen will go back to the drawing board to increase
their offensive output.
On Thursday, Milodrag Akmaedzic had the only
goal for the Hitmen.
The results leave the Hitmen at 3-6-4 with 13
points, tied for fourth in the Western Conference. However, Hamilton Thunder
which also has 13 points, has four games in hand.
Olympians are second
in the West at 5-2-3, with 18 points.
Brampton has a busy weekend ahead.
Saturday they travel to meet the Durham Flames in the opening game of a two-game
aggregate goals CPSL League Cup quarter-final. The return engagement is Aug. 18
at Victoria Park Stadium at 7 p.m.
Durham defeated the Hitmen 2-1 in a
league game the last time the teams met.
Hitmen are also at home Sunday
in league play as they host NCTO team at 7:30 p.m. Brampton does have a
favourable schedule over the remainder of the season. Of six league games left,
only two are on the road.
Hitmen are also hosting a dinner/dance
fundraiser Aug. 16 at Caesar’s Banquet Hall, 12495 Hwy. 50 and Industrial Rd.
Cost is $60 per person. For information check the team’s web site at
