Final Score:.....York Region Shooters...1...Mississauga Olympians.....3....
Attendance started at about 200 but gradually emptied out as the weather turned cold in the night air.
The York Region Shooters players are actually about fourteen of the 2001 Canadian U-19 Club Champions Vaughan Azzuri plus about three to five from last year's Shooters.
Kevin Desurpa scored all three goals and quickly takes the CPSL goalscoring lead in only one game.
Mississauga Olympians have noone from the 2001 Toronto Olympians on their roster although coach/owner David Gee has some soccer veterans like former Lynx defender Daryl Holmes, and A-League traveller Darren Tilley. Also last year's Lynx player Aaron Benjamin.
York Region Shooters had enough chances in the second half alone to win but sent some sitters wide of goal or had the goalie make the necessary save.
Only thing I didn't like about the Olympians is the numbers on their uniforms were small and narrow. Thanks to the fans and club officials who helped me read them. Also the longer report I'll come up with won't have my most descriptive notes because I was freezing my hands off and it's the first game of the season.
York Region Shooters moved back to Highland Park after a few years absence but not much has changed except the portable stands have been moved to the south side of the field leaving most of tonight's crowd milling around the north side so they could duck into the warm clubhouse. The east goal still has a forest behind it but has strung up extra netting besides the fence to stop the ball being lost on high miskicks. The west goal is still in front of the parking lot which was filled early (it doubles as a depot for schoolbuses). I'm only mentioning this because I'd commented earlier on the team taking out a full page ad in Inside Soccer pleading for each of the 35000 registered soccer players to come to one of their twelve home games and they'd average 8000 fans a game. Umm couldn't squash them in at Highland Park anyway!
