Attendance was announced as 18891 on this warm evening. This was not part of the season's ticket package but we were allowed first chance at buying tickets. Some tickets were given to ticket holders of the Los Angeles Galaxy game who couldn't make their way through the G20 disturbances last month.
A Man of the Match was not announced this game. Maybe that is a policy of the CONCACAF competition. There is a policy that no national anthems are played before the game so fans starting singing 'O Canada' while we waited for the game to start.
Stefan Frei earned the shutout for TFC. CDM goalie Donaldo Morales stopped taking goal kicks in the second half after he was injured.
Motagua's roster includes four players who were on the Honduran national team that was at the World Cup less than a month ago. Defenders Sergio Mendoza and Emilio Izaguirre, midfielder Amadou Guevara, and forward Georgie Welcome were those players. It is currently the pre-season in Honduras so players may not have performed their best.
Motagua's uniforms have the Pepsi logo on the chests. Instead of names on their back shoulders, they all said Gatorade.
TFC players were sitting back in the second half which was dangerous as it gave Motagua a few chances to score the equalizer.
Toronto FC got the win which was absolutely important but it may not be enough because now they have to go down to Honduras next week for the rematch. Total goals break any kind of tie and the away goals rule comes into effect if goals are equal. TFC should have had a few more goals. A win of 3 or 4 nothing would have made things much easier. Stories have been circulating for the last week about trouble that Canadian teams have had over the years with biased referees and hostile crowds.
