Attendance was announced as 21436 which I thought was exaggerated. There looked like there were almost as many as the weekend game against Seattle Sounders when they announced 18394. Lots of people were fighting their way through traffic to get here by 8:00pm. The weather was cool with temperatures falling once the sun set.
The fans near me were listening on their cell phones and cheering for Montreal---not the soccer team but the hockey team Montreal Canadiens who won a huge upset in game seven in the first round of the NHL playoffs. There were plenty of fans who want a Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup.
The game program mentioned the history of the Nutrilife Championship. This is only the third year of the competition. I don't like the revisitionalist history which mentions the Voyageurs Cup in the same breath not mentioning that this is a fan bought trophy that has been awarded since 2002 and won seven years in a row by Montreal Impact until last year when Toronto FC won. I helped pay for that trophy which was purchased by fan donations. At least the article about Dwayne De Rosario mentions he started his career in 1997 with the Toronto Lynx (of the USL) which articles published in the last few years ignored the existance of that team.
I thought TFC would press harder to score more in the first half when they had the winds at their back and were only up 1-0. Much like their first regular season home game against Philadelphia Union, the team had the luxury of playing more than half the game one man up.
Defender Nick Garcia was greeted with a chorus of boos when he was introduced at the start of the game but he drew Roberto Brown to punch him in the TFC box and Brown was sent off with a straight Red card. Garcia may have been knocked out and was immediately replaced with forward O'Brian White which caused the team to get Gabe Gala to come from forward to play as a defender. Ty Harden was injured on the first TFC goal. Next day papers reveal he took a spike in his leg and took 22 stitches. I saw him run back with the rest of the celebrating players back to his own side of center and then collapse before play resumed.
Much of the last 15 minutes was played in midfield as the Impact couldn't get into the last third of the TFC end with a man down and TFC players passed the ball around to kill as much time as they could.
Unlike the last home game, I could not see any anti-Mo Johnson/MLSE ownership banners tonight. A win over Seattle Sounders temporary has cooled the rants for now.
An e-mail promised that TFC would wear their gray uniforms for each game of this tournament and offered a 50% discount on that colour at their souvenir stands which I took them up on. I had thought with the regular red colour and their new white uniforms, they might retire the colour gray. I didn't find out why the Impact wore pink--the obvious would be like TFC for a few games last year, to raise awareness about breast cancer. The Impact uniforms of white numbers on pink shirts was very hard to read.
TFC now travel to Salt Lake City for a Saturday evening game against the defending MLS champions Real Salt Lake.
