TORRES CONTINUES TO SHINE FOR PHILADELPHIA

18-Year-Old Phenom Brings Creativity, Production to Union Attack
Torres has been dynamic through three games for the Union

Roger Torres was 17 when he made his impressive debut with America de Cali of the Colombian First Division last year. One year later, at the young age of 18, Torres continues to get better. Imagine how good he can be at 19 or 20, or how about in his prime.

"Oh my, the sky is the limit," said Philadelphia Union midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi. "Roger is so talented. He can be one of the most special players in the league."

Torres has been a sparkplug for the club in its first three games. Even though they played short-handed for much of Thursday's match and Torres came off in the 56th minute, Torres supplied plenty of chances for Philadelphia Union in their 2-1 loss at Toronto on Thursday night. One of those chances, a gorgeous ball by Torres played in to a streaking Jordan Harvey, resulted in the side's lone goal.

When the club signed Torres on loan (Philadelphia has a purchase option), the Technical Staff knew he was an aggressive and skillful midfielder. They were right.

"We were very excited to have Roger join our club," Team Manager Peter Nowak said recently. "He's a young, talented player with a lot of potential and he'll be a strong addition to our midfield attack. He has tremendous creativity and can see the whole field well."

Torres said he's feeling more comfortable every day with his new teammates. And he feels like this club can compete immediately.

"Things are working well so far, and I am happy," Torres said after last Saturday's 3-2 win over D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field. "I am working with them every day. We have a lot of work to do, and we are improving all the time. I think it's a great situation for me. I am really happy here."

Torres started 15 games for America de Cali last year and showed the type of grit Nowak is always searching for in his players. When Torres was brought here, it was with a specific purpose in mind - to help Philadelphia Union win.

"I don't think it's any pressure at all because this is my job," Torres said. "There is a reason why they got me here. It's because I am happy working under pressure and I am comfortable with it. I like pressure-filled games. I play well with high stakes."

As for the future, well, no one really knows just how good Torres will become. His teammates are just thrilled to have him on their side.

"You wouldn't know Roger is 18," midfielder Shea Salinas said. "He's very mature and plays that way, too. He was a great player to add to our club. I think we're all excited about having him this season."
