Attendance was about 800 people for this mid-day game. The crowd was almost exclusively children from summer day camps and sports camps around the region.
The Lynx only had only scored five goals in eleven games before today's game. Without getting too excited about the Lynx more than doubling their goal total in one game, the Internationals had only brought ten players for this game. In the sweltering heat their team fizzled as the game wore on although after saying that I noticed that the visitors got a few breakaways only called back because of offsides. More accurate shooting from the Lynx and this could have been up to double digits. Best non goal chance was when Lynx Greg Lewandowski sent in a follow up from a partial clearance with a blast from 22 yards down the middle that had his shot hit the bar.
Internationals record coming into today's game was 2-8-2 which was slightly worse than the Lynx 3-8-0 mark.
The Lynx started fast with a shooting gallery before their goal outburst at the 10 minute mark. Internationals had one good chance at 7 minutes when Steven Kane was in alone on a break and he chipped the goalie standing at 12 yards but the ball hit the right post and the defence got back to cover the danger.
The Lynx with a full bench to draw on made key subs to always keep fresh legs on the field. Captain Mik McNamara was subbed at 52 minutes and gave his armband to Jean Tshimpaka to finish the game. Like last Sunday's game the Lynx subbed goaltender Greg Brooks to replace Matthew Silva at halftime. That game was a surprise as they were holding onto a shutout and a slim lead against the dominating Dayton Dutch Lions whereas today's game was out of hand.
Lynx did luck-in with the referee's decision on the Penalty kick call. Lukis Risto could have been given a Red card for being the last man back and tripping up Steven Kane on a breakaway. That was the only card given out in the game.
After the game I asked an International official why they'd only brought ten players. They have injury problems and could only find that many players. At least, he answered, the team didn't have to take an overnight bus for this early game and got to stay at a hotel last night. (Looking on the USL website later in the day, I saw the lineups of the July 3rd game between the two teams in Cleveland and the Internationals only had three subs on their bench listed for that game.
The Lynx next game is against Cincinnati Kings at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga this Sunday at 4:00pm. The Lynx have now won three in a row.
