2010-10-31

Brantford Galaxy defeated FC Hamilton Croatia 3-0 to win the CSL championship in a well atended, entertaining encounter at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Sunday afternoon.

Galaxy midfielder Haris Fazlagic opened the scoring at 22 minutes off a left wing cross by Ranko Golijanin. Golijanin struck Galaxy's second goal at 60 minutes and Fazlagic scored his second goal at 66 minutes for a 3-0 score that held to the final whistle.

Both teams are in their inaugural season in the CSL and Brantford imported seven players from Europe to be competitive.

"It took a long time, weeks before we had the team playing as they did today and that's why we are much better than we showed in those early games," said Galaxy head coach Lazo Dzepina. "We worked very hard to win this game, it all went according to plan and we're very happy."

Brantford finished seventh of 13 teams in the regular season, then defeated Serbian White Eagles over two games in the playoffs and scored a 5-3 win over Portugal FC to reach the final. FC Hamilton Croatia ended the season in third position.

The match ended a more that five-month long season that kicked off May 8

The CSL announced their award winners for 2010 with top scorer with 17 goals Tihomir Maletic of Toronto Croatia receiving the 2010 MVP award.

CSL commissioner Domenic Di Gironimo announced also that teams from Ottawa, Pickering (Pickering Power), the Kitchener area and Erin Mills in Mississauga have received conditional acceptance into the league for 2011.
