BRANTFORD GALAXY IN CSL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL....Golijanin leads with hat-trick in 5-3 semifinal victory
2010-10-22
Ranko Golijanin, a former player with Hercules FC in the Spanish First Division and a member of the Milwaukee Rampage USL championship winning side of 2002, was a big reason for Brantford Galaxy advancing to the CSL Championship Final following a 5-3 victory over Portugal FC Friday night.
Golijanin scored a hat-trick in the semifinal match played at Centennial Stadium, the winner to meet FC Hamilton Croatia or Toronto Croatia in the championship final set for October 31.
Golijanin had Galaxy off on the right foot with two first half goals at 21 and 35 minutes and Portugal FC responded with a goal by forward Jarek Whiteman at 40 minutes for a 2-1 score at the break.
Portugal FC's Andrea Lombardo tied the game 2-2 at 49 minutes and the turning point of a well-played encounter came when Brantford forward Miodrag Andjelkovic struck at 52 minutes to give his side a 3-2 lead. A Galaxy momentum continued until 10 minutes later the visiting side's Kyle Grootenboer put the ball past Portugal FC goalkeeper Mike Silva for a 4-2 Galaxy lead.
Golijanin scored his third goal at 62 minutes to make it 5-2 for Galaxy and at 87 minutes Massimo Mirabelli found the net for Portugal, a 5-3 score at the final whistle.
Brantford Galaxy now await the outcome of an all-Croatian semifinal at Brian Timmis Stadium on Sunday night when FC Hamilton Croatia clash with Toronto Croatia. That's at 7 pm.
An attractive game goes at the Joan of Arc ground on Saturday night when York Region Shooters Reserves play Serbian White Eagles Reserves for the CSL Reserve Division championship, that's a 7 pm start.
