Attendance was about 80 on this overcast late afternoon with a misty rain arriving for just a few minutes in the second half. This stadium was holding CSL Reserve League games both before and after this game.
This was one of the most exciting games I've seen this season with a lot of momentum shifts. Mircea Ilcu almost had a hat trick within six minutes as at 72 minutes he sent a 22 yard blast from the right that rang off the left goalpost and for the rebound an MIA player's cross from the left was over the players in the box.
Shooters forward Jason DeThomasis watched the game from the stands while he said he's recovering from an injury. His presence up front would have helped the team in different parts of the game.
The Impact Academy really needed to win this game. They now have only one game left this season and a piece of the eighth and final playoff spot and the other teams near them in the standings having between four and seven games to play. They had been in London on Friday night and tied London City 2-2 then had to play this game less than 24 hours later. Shooters usually play on Sundays but their owner Tony DeThomasis said it was the Impact who wanted the fixture on Saturday. The team buses in from Montreal and all season they try to make their weekends in the GTA as short as possible. They just wilted after 65 minutes despite making as many subs as they could. The top teams in the league are probably pleased with the result as they are now fairly certain they will avoid a two game playoff series with the Impact which would include a long expensive road trip.
Shooters pull into a tie for second place for at least today. They needed this win to turn the momentum of their last two games of a tie and a loss. That loss was a game where they played a man up the entire second half but Brampton Lions scored two goals to win the game just last week.
The game after this one was a Reserve league game between TFC Academy and Portugal FC. I talked to Academy team officials John and Derrick about the Reserves. I mentioned all the players that had moved on--Doneil Henry and Nicholas Lindsay moved from the TFC Academy up to the MLS Toronto FC team, about six players had moved on from the Academy onto scholarships. I was assured they have enough players on both the Academy and Reserves team as they both had 25 roster spots so there is always enough players on the bench. They are unsure of the exact rules of reclaiming players that once played for the Academy but have gone off to school. Do they still get the first claim? If they got a chance and they pass on them, they've heard that Vancouver and Montreal future MLS teams get the next chance to claim them. They've heard there is a chance that the MLS will reinstate their Reserve division. That would be perfect to find a place for TFC Academy players to move on to. These Academy Reserve players move up to the main TFC Academy team next year. Their mandate is there won't be any 23 year olds on the Academy teams to help them win but they are developing players for TFC and Canada. Other spots for next year's teams will be filled by open tryouts. They said they are going to start an Under 14 team to stretch the development chain.
