2010-09-17

Hamilton Croatia gained a significant 2-1 victory over league leaders TFC Academy Friday night, while in two other games, London City and Montreal Impact Academy tied 2-2 and Portugal FC were held to a 1-1 tie by St. Catharines Wolves.

With just seven points separating the top six teams in the CSL First Division the FC Academy visit to Brian Timmis Stadium was of high interest, and it was the home team that took the lead when Jamie Dodds found the net with a low shot from 20 yards, it was 1-0 at half time.

Hamilton Croatia added a second at 86 minutes on a goal by midfielder Danny Jirta and just four minutes later TFC Academy reduced the lead to 2-1 when Parker Seymour scored at the 90th minute, the score at the final whistle.

Hamilton Croatia jump up the standings to be tied for third place with a 10-6-5 WLT record for 35 points, tied for third place with Serbian White Eagles. TFC Academy stay on top, they have a 10-5-7 record for 37 points.

Portugal FC are on the fringes of First Division honours, so the 1-1 tie with St. Catharines Wolves must be considered a set-back.

Forward Andrea Lombardo put Portugal in front with a goal at 23 minutes, his 8th of the season, He caught the right side of the goal with a low shot from 16 yards and the goal kept the home side in the lead until Simon Murphy, who came on as a second half substitute for St. Catharines, scored a picture goal from the right of the penalty box into the roof of the net.

The 1-1 score held until the final whistle and Portugal FC now have a 9-8-4 for 31 points, while St. Catharines are at the foot of the table with a 3-13-4 record for 13 points.

While London City hold little chance of making the top eight for a playoff berth, Montreal Impact Academy are looking for every point to help their cause and they took the lead just four minutes into the game on a goal by defender Maxim Tissot.

17 minutes after scoring, Tissot was shown the red card for a dangerous challenge on London's Andrew Logue and at 30 minutes the home side's Genti Dervishi saw his attempt on the Montreal goal saved brilliantly by 'keeper Maxime Crepeau.

London City tied the game at 42 minutes on a goal by Anasse Brouk, his fifth of the season and Montreal took a 2-1 lead two minutes later by Mercea Ilcu. It was 2-1 at the break.

Andrew Logue tied the game for London City at 70 minutes for a 2-2 at the final whistle to end a game which gave the home side a chance to celebrate player Jeff Brown and to retire his familiar number 29 jersey following 13 consecutive years with the club.

Montreal Impact Academy have a 7-9-6 record for 27 points, while London City have a 3-11-6 record for 15 points.

Montreal Impact Academy are in the only CSL game scheduled for Saturday, they clash with York Region Shooters at Maple, a 5 pm kickoff.
