LOWLY ASTROS SHOCK SERBIAN EAGLES......Shooters win and closing in......Brampton marches on, 5-1
2010-09-03

North York Astros upset league leading Serbian Eagles 1-0, York Region Shooters beat Portugal FC 3-2 and Brampton Lions moved closer to a playoff berth with a 5-1 victory over London City, three games in the CSL Friday.

Only the way in which the goal was scored could be considered more unexpected at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

With the Astros losing their last 10 games to plummet in the standings and top of the table Serbian White Eagles undefeated in 15, a win for North York could be seen as the oddity of the season.

But North York Astros did defeat Serbian White Eagles on a goal at 24 minutes, scored when Shawn Brown lobbed the ball from 35 yards past his own goalkeeper into his own net.

A surprised Milos Durkovic, 'keeper for the Serbian Eagles, could only watch the ball enter the roof of the net and the only goal held up for the rest of the game, a game generally, except for the 1-0 score, controlled by the league leaders.

Serbian White Eagles remain on top of the standings with a 9-2-6 WLT record for 33 points, while the Astros move up to 11th position with a 4-12-2 record for 17 points.

It was a narrow, but important win for York Region Shooters over Portugal FC at Lamport Stadium, a game which started well for the home side Portugal who led at 46 minutes on a goal by forward Adrian Pena who struck a left foot shot inside the right post.

York Region's Alex Trujillo tied the score 1-1 at 54 minutes, then Shooters' Kadian Lecky scored from the penalty spot at 63 minutes, his 11th of the season to make it 2-1.

Alan Badat scored for Portugal FC five minutes later for a 2-2 score, then came the best goal of the night, a well placed strike just inside the post by the visitors' Cameron Medwin, a 3-2 victory for York Region Shooters.

York Region Shooters move up to second place with 32 points from a 9-3-5 record, while Portugal FC have a 8-8-3 record for 27 points.

There were plenty of goals, red cards and some yellows at Cove Road in London where controversy surrounded referee Yusri Rudolf in the 5-1 win for Brampton Lions over London City.

Brampton opened the scoring on a goal by forward Daniel Nascimento five minutes into the game and London replied just two minutes later when Younan Samra equalized for a 1-1 score.

The Lions went ahead 2-1 at 35 minutes, a goal by Andy Garcia – the score at the interval - and a London City own goal at 49 minutes gave Brampton a 3-1 lead.

A melee broke out in the Brampton half of the field at 76 minutes and this led to Nascimento of Brampton and Michael Marcoccia of London City being red carded. Less than five minutes later Samra of London was shown the red card after receiving a second caution.

Two goals, the first at 86 minutes and a second at 90 minutes by Blazej Skoczylas of Brampton Lions confirmed a victory for the visitors, 5-1 at the final whistle.

Brampton improve to 6-8-4 for 22 points, while London City remain at 14 points with a 3-9- 5 record,
