TORONTO CROATIA, PORTUGAL FC DEADLOCK 1-1.....Croatia's unbeaten streak stretches to 11
2010-08-23

Toronto Croatia extended an unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 1-1 tie with Portugal FC Sunday night and in one other game scheduled for Sunday, the Brampton Lions vs. York Region Shooters game was postponed early in the day due to water on the Victoria Park surface.

The Toronto Croatia home encounter with Portugal FC was an even contest throughout and it was the prolific Croatia striker Tihomir Maletic who opened the scoring at 24 minutes with a drive from 22 yards that eluded Portugal 'keeper Mike Silva to find the lower right corner of the net, a 1-0 score at half-time.

Portugal tied the game at the 54th minute mark, a goal by forward Andrea Lombardo who scored in similar fashion to beat Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika. The 1-1 score remained to the final whistle.

The tie was Toronto Croatia's sixth of the season and they are unbeaten since losing to Brantford Galaxy on May 23, a total 11 games. Croatia were defeated 4-2 by Portugal FC in their first game of the season two days earlier on May 21. The Mississauga-based side now has a 5-2-6 WLT record for 21 points and are tied for 7th position in the table. Portugal FC have a 7-7-3 record for 24 points and now in 6th position.

Portugal scorer Maletic struck his 12th of the season to lead the goalscoring title and has set a torrid pace in recent games since putting four into the net in the 4-1 Toronto Croatia win over North York Astros on August 1.

Lombardo's goal was his third of the weekend after scoring twice in Portugal's 2-1 victory over FC Hamilton Croatia on Friday.

The one other game scheduled for Sunday, Brampton Lions at home to York Region Shooters, was called off during the morning due to the amount of water on the playing surface.

Toronto Croatia travel to St. Catharines for a game with the Wolves on Wednesday night, then go to Vancouver for an exhibition game at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby on Friday night against Athletic Club of BC of the Fraser Valley Soccer League. Sunday's league clash with York Region Shooters in Toronto on Sunday has been postponed.
