SERBIAN EAGLES HELD BY TFC....Portugal FC and Toronto Croatia both win Friday
2010-08-21

League leaders Serbian White Eagles were held to a 1-1 tie by a gritty TFC Academy team, Portugal FC gained a 2-0 victory at FC Hamilton Croatia and Toronto Croatia continued their steady climb up the standings with a 2-0 win at London, three games in the CSL Friday.

With better finishing from a team that fought with plenty of determination, TFC Academy could have put a stop to Serbian White Eagles now 14 game unbeaten streak after taking the lead at the 48th minute mark following a scoreless first half. Forward Tristan Jackson scored the goal with a well-placed right foot shot when he broke through in the penalty box with only Eagles goalkeeper Milos Kocic to beat.

Stefan Vukovic tied the game for Serbian Eagles at the 68th minute mark when he took a cross from the left wing to score and while the top of the table team looked the stronger side, the academy team failed to score with two good opportunities.

Serbian White Eagles are still on top with a 9-1-5 WLT record for 32 points, while TFC Academy are at 8-4-4 with 28 points.

Portugal FC suffered a 5-0 defeat in the hands of FC Hamilton Croatia on July 10, but made amends with a decisive 2-0 victory at Brian Timmis Stadium, thanks to two goals by forward Andrea Lombardo who struck at 20 minutes and again at the 88th minute mark.

Referee Justin Tavis was kept busy in the game, he dismissed the visitors' Dominic Antonini after showing a second yellow card and he sent off Hamilton's Jamie Dodds with a straight red.

Portugal FC improved to a 7-7-2 record for 23 points as a result of the win, while Hamilton Croatia are at 7-5-5 for 26 points ad fifth place in the standings.

Toronto Croatia played a full game at London following two successive games cut short on August 13 and August 20. The Mississauga-based Croatia were leading 1-0 at half time in the first game when the game was abandoned at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton following an incident which resulted in FC Hamilton Croatia defender Antonio Zupan facing referee assault charges by soccer’s governing body. The outcome of that game is being decided by the CSL and in the second game being played at Centennial Stadium, lightning at put a stop to the play at 38 minutes and the game will be replayed in its entirety.

Croatia's Dani Yankovic opened the scoring at Cove Road in London, he scored at the 24th minute mark and the league-leading scorer Tihomir Maletic struck his 12th of the season at the 90th minute. London City forward Michael Marcoccia missed the best chance to score for the home side at 78 minutes but failed to find the open net.

Toronto Croatia have a 5-2-5 record for 20 points, while London City are at 3-8-4 for 13 points. Croatia travel to Vancouver this coming week for an exhibition game against Athletic Club BC at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby on August 27.
