2010-08-04

FC Hamilton Croatia kept their CSL league title hopes alive with a 3-0 defeat of struggling St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

In a game played at Club Roma in St. Catharines, the home side showed some early promise in an attempt to pick up a much needed win and three points for any hope of becoming one of the eight CSL teams to make the playoffs, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring after 20 minutes when John Hudson found the left corner of the net from a corner kick.

FC Hamilton Croatia were lifted by the goal and at 33 minutes forward Aidan O'Keefe scored from 20 yards, a shot that Wolves' goalkeeper Claudio Perri got a hand to but failed to prevent the ball finding the net. It was O'Keefe's tenth goal of the season and the first year CSL striker is very much in contention for the scoring title.

Following a 2-0 lead at the interval, Hamilton Croatia went further ahead when John Reilly collected a cross from the right wing to beat Perri on his right side and the 3-0 score held to the final whistle.

FC Hamilton Croatia jump to second position in the standings with a 7-3-5 WLT record for 26 points, one point behind York Region Shooters in a tight race that has just three points separating five teams. St. Catharines Wolves have a 2-9-2 record for 8 points in 12th position.

FC Hamilton Croatia visit Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke for a clash with the high flying Serbian White Eagles on Friday at 8 pm. Serbian Eagles are undefeated since May 28 and have conceded just 7 goals in their 11 games played. St. Catharines Wolves visit Cove Road in London on Friday, that's an 8.40 pm kickoff.
