YORK REGION NOT GIVING UP LEAD IN CSL FIRST DIVISION.....extend margin to 4 points with 2-0 victory
2010-07-07
York Region Shooters extended their First Division lead to four points with a 2-0 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the CSL Wednesday.
Scoring a goal in each half, York Region took the lead at the 42nd minute mark when midfielder Darryl Gomez struck from outside of the box to beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri. The home side appealed for an offside call but the goal counted and it was 1-0 at the interval.
St. Catharines attempted to break through for an equalizer in the second half, but most of the contest took place in the midfield with few real goalscoring opportunities. The Shooters looked the more aggressive side as the second half progressed and eventually made it 2-0 at the 70th minute mark when Ryan Dummett beat Perri from close range.
The game ended 2-0 and gave the Shooters a 4-point margin over second team Milltown FC in what is still a tight race at the top. The York Region side now has a 7-3-1WLT record for 22 points, while St. Catharines at the other end of the table are struggling to get out of the cellar position with a 1-7-1 record for 4 points.
Play resumes on Friday night in the CSL with Serbian White Eagles at home to Brantford Galaxy, Milltown FC is hosting Toronto Croatia and FC Hamilton Croatia travels to Toronto for a game with Portugal FC, all three game kickoff at 8 pm.
There are two games on Saturday, with London City traveling to Montreal for a game at the Saputo Stadium with Montreal Impact Academy, that's a changed kickoff time of 1 pm, while there has been a change in the venue for the one game in Ontario, a TFC Academy vs. North York Astros clash now being played at Brockton Stadium in the city’s west end, that’s a 3 pm start.
