MILLTOWN FC SCORES BIG WIN OVER SHOOTERS.....North York Astros and FC Hamilton Croatia win decisively while Portugal and Serbian Eagles tie 0-0
2010-07-02

Milltown FC came from a 1-0 deficit to score a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over league-leading York Region Shooters, FC Hamilton Croatia defeated Brampton Lions 3-1, North York Astros blanked London City 3-0 and the Portugal FC vs. Serbian White Eagles clash ended in a scoreless tie, all in CSL action Friday.

Kadian Lecky put the league leaders in front at 36 minutes, his seventh goal of the season for a 1-0 York Region lead at half-time and for a while it looked like the Shooters would strengthen their position at the top of the CSL standings until Milltown coach Rafael Carbajal brought Cordell Benjamin into the side at 60 minutes.

The move paid off quickly when Benjamin took a pass from Erick Olazabal to find the net at the 65th minute mark and Benjamin scored a second when he picked up a rebound from a corner kick to put the ball past Shooters goalkeeper Yosuto Hoshiko, a 2-1 score that held until the final whistle. The win gave the home side an improved 5-2-3 WLT record for 18 points and it was Milltown FC's sixth game without a defeat to bring the new team in the CSL within a point of the league leaders York Region Shooters.

North York Astros scored a decisive victory over London City and again forward Mahyar Kohbad was an important factor in the win with two goals to lift his tally to10 for the season. Kohbad opened the scoring when he beat London goalkeeper Scott Mueller from close range at 35 minutes and the Astros' striker struck again when he scored at 52 minutes from the penalty spot.

North York forward Erik Grigore sealed the win with a goal at 81 minutes to give the Astros an improved 4-2-2 record for 14 points in the season.

FC Hamilton Croatia were in charge late in the game against Brampton Lions at Brian Timmis Stadium and it was Aidan O'Keefe who put Hamilton on course for the win with a goal at the 5-minute mark, his 7th of the season.

Brampton forward Judah Hernandez tied the game 1-1 with a goal at 26 minutes, a 1-1 tie at half-time and the Croatia side's Preston Corporal scored twice, at 58 and 80 minutes to give his side the 3-1 win.

FC Hamilton Croatia are at 4-1-4 for 16 points following the victory, to lift the Steel City side to third in the standings.

There were no goals but lots of attractive soccer played at Lamport Stadium where Portugal FC and Serbian White Eagles played to a 0-0 tie. There were several close attempts by both sides, particularly near the end when Portugal's Jamaal Smith with a close call from a header and Sergio De Luca's ground shot that was saved by Eagles' goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

Serbian White Eagles were strong in midfield but appeared lacking the forward punch for which they have been known in the past. Striker Sasa Viciknez entered the game in the second half but made little impression on the Portugal defense with Mike Silva solid in the Portugal goal.

There is one game in the CSL Saturday when Brantford Galaxy travel to Quebec for a game with Montreal Impact Academy at the Saputo Stadium in the afternoon and there are two games on Sunday.
