Canada Kicks -- News Story The Red Club Is Coming
Lynx to take on Iranian powerhouse.
by Paul Hendren
After negotiations broke down to lure a top European club to Toronto the A - League's Toronto Lynx widened their search for a formidable international opponent.  The Lynx will lace up their boots one last time this season when they will take on popular Iranian club Persepolis of Tehran.  The international friendly is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday September 7, 1998 at Toronto's historic Varsity Stadium.  Persepolis is also scheduled to take on  the Vancouver Eighty - Sixers in their two game tour of Canada.

Persepolis, one of the best supported clubs in Asia, will be bringing several notable international stars fresh from their impressive performance at the World Cup.  Led by eccentric goalkeeper Abedzadeh such names as Peyrovani, Saadvi , and Ali Parvin will be included in Piruzi's talent rich roster.  Brilliant youngster Mahdavika, who was targeted to join England's Tottenham Hotspur, will probably not be making the trip due to injuries he sustained in a recent car accident.

Tickets for the Labour Day clash can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

CLEANING HOUSE

After playing out a rather disastrous sophomore season the Lynx are cleaning house.  Earlier in the week Toronto traded the popular striking partnership of Elvis Thomas and Phil Caporella to division rivals Montreal for future considerations and an undisclosed amount of
cash.  With the Lynx languishing at the bottom of the league in goal output the two talented players did not endear themselves to Toronto's
coaching staff.

A FINAL VIEWING

The Labour Day clash in Toronto may be soccer enthusiasts last opportunity to see top flight soccer at historic Varsity Stadium. There is increased speculation that the wrecking balls will invade Canada's soccer shrine by years end.  University of Toronto officials will not be booking events into 1999.
