Pro-40 Select loses fifth straight

TORONTO--Franco Spadafina converted the winning penalty kick in the 84th minute as the Toronto Lynx (3-4) handed U.S. Pro-40 Select (3-7) their fifth straight loss, 2-1 in front of 1,732 Sunday at Varsity Stadium.

Two Pro-40 players, Carlos Parra and Leo Squadrone, received their second yellow cards and were ejected on the play leading up to Spadafina's decisive shot.

The Lynx led 1-0 at halftime, after Guiseppe Lanotte took advantage of a defensive miscue in the 33rd minute. A P-40 player missed the ball, which rolled toward the goal. While the rest of the defense held back, anticipating an offside call, Lanotte outraced 'keeper Matt Jordan to the ball and sent the shot into an open net.

Josh Wolff equalized with his seventh goal of the season for P-40, one-touching the ball to netminder Hubert Busby's right from 15 yards in the 56th minute. P-40 outshot the Lynx 10-4, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half. Busby finished with five saves.
