CONNECTICUT WOLVES“SLIP” PAST TORONTO IN SHOOTOUT, 2-1

Under torrential winds anddownpours on Saturday Night, the Wolves defeated the Toronto Lynx, 2-1 in a Shootout. SteveCoxon scored the game winner in the 6th round of the Shootout, driving a blast pastToronto Goalkeeper Hubert Busby.

While the horrid conditions madefor much sloppy play, both teams had their share of scoring chances. Erik Barbieri came in on a breakaway with 7 minutes to go in the first half, but had the play broken up frombehind. Toronto had a similar situation, when Terry St. Louis went one-on-one withWolves Keeper Chuck Martini, before the defensive tandem of Ian McIntrye and Dave Kelly racedback to run down the speedy forward in the 58th minute.

One minute later, the Wolves goton the board when Connecticut’s Shawn Boney stole a lobbed pass and placed itperfectly for Erik Barbieri, running at his top speed fired a blast past HubertBusby to put the Wolves ahead, 1-0. Toronto evened the score when former Wolves playerand University of Hartford standout Elvis Thomas sent a shot off the post, ricocheting in toknot the score at 1-1 with 3 minutes left to play. The overtime period went back andforth in the rain and wind, leading up to the shootout in which the Wolves prevailed,2-1.

The Wolves head to the road toplay the Rochester Raging Rhinos next Saturday at 7:30pm. This game will be broadcast livevia the internet on Real Audio, starting at 7:00pm.

The Wolves will then return homethe following day to face the U.S. Pro-40 Select Team, Sunday, May 17th, 7:30pm atVeteran’s Memorial Stadium in New Britain. U.S. Pro-40 Select is made up of MajorLeague Soccer Players who gave up their college eligibility to play Major League Soccer.These players train with their respective clubs on the weekdays, and then play an A-LeagueSchedule on weekends.
