June 7th, 1999 Olympians Get Flying Start
Toronto Olympians - last
year's League Champions and League Cup Champions played
their first game of the season away to York Region
Shooters at Richmond Green and gave every indication that
they will be the team to beat again this year.
In the early part of the game, it was the Shooters who
looked likely to continue their promising start to the
season following last week's 1 - 1 tie against St.
Catharines. The Shooters took the lead in the 7th. minute
through Damien Puranda and had several chances to
increase their lead. However, in the 25th. minute Elvis
Thomas equalised for the Olympians and two quick goals in
the 31st. and 32nd. minutes by Eddy Berdusco and John
Matas gave Olympians a 3 - 1 lead at half-time. Early in
the second half Elvis Thomas scored his second of the
game to put Olympians ahead 4 - 1 and in the final 15
minutes they put the game out of reach with goals from
Gus Kouzmanis and two from John Matas to give him a hat
trick in the game and a final score of 7 - 1 for the
Olympians.
Glen Shields Sun Devils home opener was against London
City and it was the home side that had most of the
possession in the first half but they created few scoring
opportunities. However, they did take the lead in the
35th. minute when a cross from the left wing went through
the goal area to give Robert Irving an easy tap in for a
goal. In the second half, London City equalised as Euclid
Bertrand collected a rebound off the goal-post in the
55th. minute and put the ball past the sprawling
goal-keeper. Glen Shields had most of the chances for the
balance of the game and took a 2 - 1 lead in the 66th.
minute with a goal from Tony Donia and held on for the
win.
North York Astros also had their home opener on Sunday
against Oshawa Flames but the home crowd was disappointed
as the Flames took a 3 - 0 lead at half time with goals
from John Lawrence in the 10th. minute, Darryl Gomez in
the 13th. minute and Olleston Skeete in the 28th. minute.
The Flames had several good chances to increase their
lead in the second half but with 15 minutes to go, the
game suddenly turned around.
In the 77th. minute, Astros captain Alessander Nardi
scored to cut the Flames lead to two goals and two
minutes later, the Flames were reduced to ten men as
Patrick Sullivan was red-carded. The Astros now pressed
forward and were rewarded with a second goal from
Alessander Nardi in the 84th. minute. However, the Flames
managed to hold on for the final few minutes to come away
with a 3 - 2 win and take first place in the league
standings.
