Toronto Lynx 1999 season in review

October 23, 1999.

Here's a few of my thoughts on the Toronto Lynx season almost two months after their final game.

Their attendance was up about 40% from last year and now stands 9th in the A-League. In late breaking news, they will be allowed to use Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto for another year as the wrecker's ball has been kept away until a different development plan has been designed for the University of Toronto for future use of the site. That gives the team one more year to build their attendance before moving to another location. I expected a 50% drop in fan support if they moved to any other site next year, only their fourth year of existance.

Their on field performance was a slight improvement over 1998 as they finished with a 12 win, 16 loss record and missed the playoffs again. Once again they got off to a very slow start and at the one-third mark of the season had a cellar dwelling 1-7 record. The club started out with a youth movement as the average age of the players introduced at the pre-season press conference was 23 but as the season wore on more positions were given to more experienced (and more expen$ive) veterans who could find the back of the net. Like last year, they just waited too late and had to hope for other teams to be upset to try to catch a final playoff spot.

I've heard some rumblings about a reshuffling of the ownership hierarchy but that's a bit beyond my scope as a superfan. I'll just wait until the new season starts and make some comments about what I see on the field.
