TORONTO EDGES WOLVES

For the second straight game, the Connecticut Wolves gave a strong defensive effort, but gave up the winning goal with seconds remaining in the first half. This time, falling to the visiting Toronto Lynx, 1-0 on Sunday.

The first half saw Toronto dominate throughout, outshooting Connecticut 13-0, and 16-6 overall. While most of the shots sailed over the net, Wolves GK-Billy Gatti had to come up with 5 saves in the first half, plus one shot by the Lynx even hit the crossbar. It wasn’t until there was 14 seconds left to play in the half, when Toronto’s Nikola Vignevic scored his team leading 7th goal of the season off a pass from Francisco Dos Santos. Dos Santos, deep on the right side, squeaked a pass back to the middle to an awaiting Vignjevic. Vignjevic two-touched a low-left shot from 12 yards out, giving the Lynx a 1-0 lead at the half.

The pace of the second half slowed down considerably for both sides, with both teams began feeling the effects of the 95-degree muggy weather. Connecticut’s best scoring chance came with 12 minutes to play, as BoBo fanned on a shot after beating his defender on the left side. Toronto GK-Theo Zagar was called upon to make only 1 save, that coming with 5 minutes to play, diving to his right to save a 24-yard Erik Barbieri shot.

With the win, Toronto improves to 5-9, while Connecticut drops to 5-10. The Wolves won the earlier meeting at Toronto, 2-1 in overtime, back on June 2nd.
