WOLVES BOBOLICIOUS IN TORONTO, WIN 2-1 IN O.T.!!!!

June 2, 1999 - A goal by BoBo, four minutes into sudden death overtime, gave the Connecticut Wolves a 2-1 win over the Toronto Lynx. In front of 2,854 very enthusiastic fans at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium on Wednesday, with a special 12:30pm, School Day starttime.

The first half saw Toronto go the attack early on. In the 7th minute, on a cornerkick from the left side, D-Milan Kojic headed a shot to the upper right corner, but GK-Billy Gatti was there making the diving save. With Gatti on the ground and the ball 6 yards from the net, Toronto M-Brian Ashton followed it up with another pointblank shot to the left, but a sprawling Gatti made his second diving save in a 5 second span.

Connecticut went with a new 1-2 punch up front, with Australian M/F-Sammy Faris starting at forward with newcomer Michael Domm, who was acquired via loan earlier in the week from Rochester. In the 25th minute, Domm collided with a Toronto defender, cutting his right eye. Wolves Coach Brian Bliss elected to play 10-on-11 for five minutes, while Domm was patched up on the sideline.

Soon after returning, Domm, Faris as well as M-Blas Cardozo and M-Phil Caporrella, started playing together more fluidly, moving the ball more effecitively up the field. Two questionable offsides calls put a stop to a pair of scoring chances for Domm as well as Faris, but it was evident that Connecticut was starting to build momentum.

The new combination paid off in the 2nd half. In the 50th minute, the Wolves’ Toronto native Caporrella passed it to a streaking Domm down the right side. As D-Stuart Black caught up with him, Domm cut back to his left and sent a long centering pass to the front of the net. Sammy Faris, 6 yards out, knocked it in off a short hop with his right foot, and Connecticut took a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the heavens opened up as both teams found themselves playing in a downpour, but kept up the intensity throughout this highly contested A-League game. Toronto tied it up off a 30-yard free kick by F-Nicola Vignjevic in the 73rd minute that sailed over the wall and into the upper left corner of the net.

Two minutes into overtime, BoBo nearly ended it, with a header that went inches over the crossbar. BoBo would get another chance, as 3 minutes later, Blas Cardozo broke through up the middle, splitting the defenders, dished it off to Gil Hokyama, who fed a hairline pass to the right side where BoBo was there to put the game away.

Connecticut improves to 3-8 and sits in 5th place in the A-League’s Northeast division. Toronto drops to 1-5 and sits in 8th.

ROSTER CHANGES: The Wolves have also announced the signing of D/F-Mike Keevan. A rookie out of U-New Hampshire, Keevan is third all=time in scoring. To make room for Keevan and Michael Domm, Connecticut released D/M-Jason Dieterle and F-Diego Fernandez.

OPPONENT CHANGE: Connecticut’s opponent for their next HOME game (June 9th) has been changed to Nova International from the World Soccer League. The Cape Cod Crusaders, who were originally slated to play the Wolves, qualified for the US Open Cup, and may have to play a 1st round match that evening. KickOff is 7:30pm.
