Toronto Lynx vs Charleston Battery
by Rocket Robin

Toronto Lynx played Charleston Battery at Varsity Stadium tonight at 6:00pm.

Toronto had played an exhibition game last night against Santa Clara of Azores and Charleston Battery played Rochester on Friday. Both of tonight's teams had lost 2-1.

John Limniatis (Montreal Impact) now plays for Charleston Battery.

23 min...Battery Clark Brisson scores on a 15 yard freekick right through Lynx 6 man wall that split off too soon. Ball went to short left side low to corner of goal. I'm still wondering why there was a freekick called from inside the box but apparently goalie Jim Larkin was called for too many steps in the box??

30 min...Battery Gilbert Jean-Baptiste was shown his 2nd yellow card in 5 minutes. This would give the Lynx plenty of time to play with a man advantage.

34 min...Lynx Ashton scores on a 20 yard rebound shot that he hits off the inside of the right post and in. A Lynx player had got a shot in the box but it deflected off a defender right back to Ashton.

99 min...Yes this was during overtime! Lynx Ricardo Munguia was shown his 2nd yellow card of the evening.

After 105 minutes the shootout started.

1. CB Paul Conway rolls ball wide right of post.
1. Lynx David Diplacido is wide left.
2. CB Dean Sewell scores.
2. Lynx Nikki Vignjevic shanks chip shot it actually looks like it rolls weakly sideways.
3. CB Alfredo Anderson scores.
3. Lynx Ashton scores.
4. CB John Wilson scores.
4. Lynx Milan Kojic has shot blocked by charging goalie Dusty Hudock (yes he played for Seattle and in the MLS).

Charleston Battery wins 2-1 in a shootout.
Charleston earn 2 points for the win.
Toronto earn 1 point for the loss.

Toronto really needed 4 points for a win as their season gradually sinks. They now go on a 3 game road trip against the good scoring/bad defense Pittsburgh team then the next weekend the 1998 champs Rochester and the dreadful Maryland team.

Attendance was announced as 1858 which seemed very generous. I can think of three reasons for the low attendance.
1. Toronto was given the Canada--USA women's game on television in the afternoon and the Canada--Ecuador men's game at 8:00pm. I got home in time to see the end of the 2nd half and saw it was tape delayed.
2. The temperature was 30oC at gametime even though it was 6:00pm.
3. The team hasn't won a game in regulation and can't score goals. The sportsfan sees the paper of the Lynx having 3 points and the first place team with 30 and thinks the season is over.
