Lynx nipped 1-0 by Hampton Roads Mariners

HAMPTON ROADS, Virginia-Saturday, May 8-Hampton Roads Mariners defeated the Toronto Lynx, 1-0, before 3,540 fans here tonight on a goal after 18 minutes by Gabe Valencia, who took a free kick from Mariners' midfielder Andreas Maier to head home from 10 yards just to the left of Lynx' goalkeeper Jim Larkin.

Both teams played tight defensively for most of the game, but Lynx' Brazilian midfielder Gaucho and defender Milan Kojic both broke through the Mariners' defence during the first and second halves, just failing to equalize.

Mariners' forwards Pasi Kinturi and Ted Haley had opportunities to increase the Hampton Roads lead, especially late in the second half when Toronto went on the attack to get the equalizer, leaving its defence vulnerable. Lynx had a player ejected for the second night in succession when defender Ricardo Munguia was dismissed three minutes from time for a rough tackle on Hampton Roads midfielder Steve Kraemer.

Lynx' coach Peter Pinizzotto was optimistic despite the loss. "The defence was outstanding, they took a lot of pressure and held up very well. If we can start scoring, we'll be OK," he said after the game. The lone Hampton goal was the first conceded in regular time by the Lynx in three games played.

Toronto was 1-1 for the season going into tonight's game, following a shootout 1-0 win against Minnesota Thunder on May 2 and a 1-0 shootout loss against Richmond Kickers last night.

The Lynx will now travel to Rochester next Sunday, May 15 for a game against the A-League champions the Raging Rhinos and the northern clash is expected to be a sellout. Toronto will then prepare for the Varsity Stadium opener set for Sunday, May 30 against Jacksonville Cyclones, a 6 p.m. kickoff.
