1. CONTROVERSY SHROUDS SECOND PLACE

It was a game that meant nothing as far as the play-offs were concerned, yet everything as far as the bragging rights to second place in the final league standings. However, last night's final regular season game at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium between Toronto Croatia and Glen Shields Sun Devils ended in controversy.

Toronto Croatia won the game by a 3 - 1 score and earned the three points they needed to jump past the Sun Devils and into second place. But following the game, Glen Shields filed a protest with the League alleging the use of an ineligible player by Toronto Croatia. The matter is now under consideration by the League.

After a scoreless first half, Croatia opened the scoring in the 56th. minute as Andy Madeiros tapped the ball into the net following a goalmouth scramble. Croatia increased their lead just four minutes later as Tomi Granic had a breakaway down the right wing and crossed the ball to an unmarked Anton Musa who fired the ball past the Glen Shields keeper.

Dave McDonald closed the gap for Glen Shields to 2 - 1 in the 85th. minute as he rose high to a cross from the right wing and headed past the Croatian keeper. However, any thoughts the Sun Devils may have had about forcing a tie and holding on to second place were dashed in injury time as Tomi Granic had a breakaway and calmly fired the ball into the net to make the final score 3 - 1.

Emotions ran high during the game with six yellow cards and one red card issued by referee Yakov Kheimahk. The tension during and after the game may well spill over into the play-offs. The two teams meet in the play-off semi-finals on Friday, October 1st., 7:00 p.m. at Oshawa Civic Stadium.
