In the opening games of the two-leg League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday night, Toronto Olympians took an important step towards reaching the final and an opportunity to defend their League Cup Championship with a 2 - 0 win in St. Catharines against Roma Wolves. Olympians took an early lead through Gus Kouzmanis in only the 4th. minute of play and made sure of their victory with a goal from Eddy Berdusco in the 65th. minute.
The conclusion of the two-game, total goals series is on Friday, September 3rd. at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough with an 8:30 p.m. kick-off. With a two goal lead from their away game, the Olympians must be favoured to advance to the final scheduled for Sunday, September 26th. at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium.
The other semi-final 1st. leg game on Wednesday finished in a stalemate - Oshawa Flames and Toronto Croatia playing to a 0 - 0 tie at Civic Stadium. The second leg will be played on Wednesday, September 1st. at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. Although Croatia have the home field advantage, Oshawa perhaps has an edge as a 1 - 1 tie would see them through to the final on the 'away goals' rule. Only if the game is tied 0 - 0 after 90 minutes would the game go into 'sudden death' (or Golden Goal) overtime and then penalty kicks if no-one scores in overtime.
