FIRST WINS FOR ST. CATHARINES AND
YORK SHOOTERS

Sunday evening saw all eight CPSL teams in action and St. Catharines Roma Wolves and York Region Shooters both came away with their first wins of the 1999 season.

St. Catharines were visiting second place Glen Shields Sun Devils and despite chances at both ends, the game was scoreless until the 75th. minute when Gary McGuchan scored the only goal of the game to give Roma a 1 - 0 win.

It was much the same at Esther Shiner Stadium where North York Astros were hosting York Region Shooters. Here the game was scoreless until the 86th. minute when John Bottineau scored the winner for the Shooters.

In Oshawa, league leaders London City were the visitors. London opened the scoring through Justin Lawrence in the 31st. minute but Oshawa Flames equalised ten minutes later with a goal from Neil Gladstone. In the second half, the Flames took a 2 - 1 lead with a goal by Alan Foggetti in the 68th. minute but London City came back to tie the game in the 77th. minute with a goal from Jurek Gebczynski. The single point from the tied game enabled London City to hang on to top spot in the league standings.

In Sunday's fourth game, Toronto Olympians had their home opener at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough against Toronto Croatia. The Olympians took a 1 - 0 lead in the first half with a goal from Eddy Berdusco in the 24th. minute. Both teams had good scoring opportunities in the second half and it was not until the 63rd. minute that we saw another goal. From a free kick just outside the area, the ball was passed to Gus Kouzmanis whose shot was going wide of the goal when it took a deflection off a Croatia defender and into the net past the helpless goalkeeper to give the Olympians a 2 - 0 lead.

The Olympians then put the game away with three goals in the last 15 minutes - a second goal from Eddy Berdusco and two from Gus Kouzmanis - for a 5 - 0 win.

The Olympians now have scored an impressive 17 goals in their first three games while conceding only one. Their next game is on Wednesday when they travel to St. Catharines for a match-up of last year's top two teams. Despite a poor start to the 1999 season, St. Catharines always seem to save their best for games against Toronto Olympians. Last year they tied the Olympians twice in St. Catharines and, of course, beat them on penalty kicks in a classic Playoff Championship final.
