A-League game Toronto Lynx vs Long Island Rough Riders
by Rocket Robin

Result of the A-League game of Saturday July 21st, 2001 between Toronto Lynx and Long Island Rough Riders played at Varsity Stadium at 7:00pm.

28 min...Lynx Juan Arango GOAL...Waldo Sponton crossed in from the near the left corner, a leaping header by Arango from 7 yards goes in just under the bar.

Final Score:....Toronto Lynx.....1.....Long Island Rough Riders.....0...

Attendance was announced as 2243 (another believable figure if you cross your eyes). The evening was hot and humid and the field was slippery after a short rainfall about an hour before the game.

Lynx had far more chances in this game than Rough Riders and the game was somewhat like last week's against Hershey (score early, get so many shots that something goes in and win 1-0, defend competantly).

Theo Zagar was back in net after a long injury and made three or four important saves. Adam Smith was the goalie for Rough Riders and kept their team in the game but the Lynx forwards waited too long for shots trying to set up the perfect shot or fired over the net.

Maybe the Lynx couldn't lose because Daniel Leon wasn't listed on the team sheets for the Rough Riders (yeah he was on the game day program) and came in as a second half replacement taking most of the cornerkicks. This is the kind of thing that earns the astericks beside the year end statistics. "* deducted 3 points for using ineligible player".

Before the game, both the Lynx and Rough Riders had only won three games this season. The Rough Riders won the division last year.
