A-League game Toronto Lynx vs Connecticut Wolves
by Rocket Robin

Result of the A-League game between Toronto Lynx and Connecticut Wolves played Tuesday May 29th, 2001 at Varsity Stadium at 11:30am. This was their annual "School Day" game.

58 min...Lynx Kristian Grzetic GOAL...Adrian Serioux runs through middle of field and trips over ball but maintains possession and passes forward to Grzetic who crosses in from right. The ball may have crossed the goalline right there but Francisco Dos Santos and Wolves Max Zieky are waiting on the left post and ball is headed into net from 3 yards. Goal scorer Grzetic and assist to Serioux. [television sports hilights reveal that Zieky got his head on ball but it was not counted as an own goal].

78 min...Wolves Fabio Zuniga GOAL...Wolves David Vaudreuil crosses ball in from right of box, ball is headed in by Zuniga from 5 yards on left post to center of net about head high.

85 min...Wolves Temoc Saurez GOAL...Saurez takes a 20 yard freekick from center of net and ball is kicked into right top corner of net [actually only waist high just inside right post] over six man wall. Saurez ran at it from the right as the two Wolves players right even with the ball just gestured like they would kick it.

Final score:...Toronto Lynx....1....Connecticut Wolves...2

I could see that trick freekick coming like the Life cereal commercial..."I'm not going to kick it, you kick it, let's get Temoc (boom)."

Lynx can put plenty of balls in the other team's box but can't get any goals. Two goals in three games isn't much better than the Canadian National Men's team.

Attendance was 4211. That's probably lower than the last few years but after this year's month long support staff strike, many Metro Toronto schools banned all field trips.

Now the two Eastern Canadian teams occupy the two bottom spots in their conference. This should get sillyboy BILLYBOY bragging about Americans again but it does raise issues about how an all Canadian league may not get the best competition if they completely split from the US teams. The Americans have whittled down their weakest teams and Wolves competely revamped their team from last year's 1 game winner with only four of twenty-two players listed as being on their 2000 roster.
