Subject: W-LEAGUE PLAYOFF SOCCER Date: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 7:56 PM TORONTO TO HOST W-LEAGUE PLAYOFF MATCH August 7, 2001- This past weekend the Toronto Inferno secured the second seed in the W-League’s Northern Conference and will play host to the Boston Renegades in W-League playoff action this Friday night. The Inferno lost 2 to 1 at the Ottawa Fury and was given the points as the Laval Dynamites forfeited their match with the Inferno. The match against the Fury also doubled as the second leg of the Trioctal Cup with the Inferno holding a 3 to 2 aggregate lead. Two first half goals would be all the Fury would need to win the cup, Danielle Vella converted a penalty and then set up Stephanie Young before the break. Maggie Mason replied late for the Inferno, bouncing a shot to the far corner from the top of the 18. The Fury take the first ever Trioctal Cup on the away goals rule with the score tied 4 a piece. After 14 matches it comes down to a do or die encounter with the Boston Renegades. The Renegades finished third in the conference, 3 points behind the Inferno. However, they have proved to be a difficult foe, tying the Inferno in Toronto and then blanking them 3 nil in Framingham. On Friday night, a place in the conference finals is at stake, kickoff will be at 7:00pm EST. at Scarborough’s Birchmount Stadium.
