WEEKEND REVIEW IN THE CPSL
OLYMPIANS CLOSING GAP WITH SECOND WIN IN FIVE DAYS Two points behind league-leading St.
Catharines It's looking like old times as defending champion
Toronto Olympians defeated North York Astros, 2-1, in CPSL action this
weekend and this follows a 3-1 win over league leading St. Catharines Roma
Wolves on Wednesday. The two wins in five days moves the Olympians into
the runner-up position, with St. Catharines Roma Wolves still maintaining
their top position following a 4-2 win over the haplass Glen Shields Sun
Devils. The Sun Devils are now firmly entrenched in the cellar position
without a point.Willy Giummarra and Tom Granic struck for the Olympians in
the 2-1 win at Birchmount Stadium, while Dejan Gluscevic scored the lone
marker for the Astros. St. Catharines goals in the 4-2 result at the
Dufferin-Clark ground tonight, came from Gary Hughes, John Sozio, Frank
Sampano and Joe Carbonara, all after Marco Antonucci opened the scoring
after 12 minutes for the Sun Devils and he scored a second shortly after
the interval.
KITCHENER
SPECIAL Toronto Supra and Toronto Croatia traveled to Budd
Park in Kitchener for a Father's Day special game in the Southwestern
Ontario community this afternoon where Croatia nipped Supra 2-1 on goals
by Peter Curic and Joe Bucic, with Dino Serafini scoring a late goal for
Supra. The Supra have dropped to third in the standings, tied on seven
points with today's opponents.
LIGHTNING STRIKES
TWICE York Region Shooters managed just a 1-1 tie at home to
London City, both goals coming in the second half when Kyle Cornet scored
for London at 63 minutes and Robert Black made it 1-1 for the Shooters ten
minutes later. The weather played a big part when these same teams came
together at Cove Road in London on Friday--the match was abandoned while
scoreless at the 67nd minute mark due to a severe thunderstorm, lightning
and a flooded ground. Lightning struck twice for London City with a
similar occurrence during the home game with Ottawa Wizards on June 1—that
game was abandoned at half-time.
