New entry Toronto Supra gained a decisive 4-1
win over London City in the CPSL season opener at Cove Road in London on Friday
night. The visitors, led by 22 year old striker Samuel Aeriyle with three goals,
looked much the best following a 1-1 half-time deadlock and helped by the
reduction of London City to 10 men with the ejection of defender Luan Jonuzi
early in the second half.
London City opened the scoring after 36 minutes
when forward Gentian Buzali took a pass from Terry Peak to score with a low shot
from 16 yards. Just five minutes later, Toronto Supra tied the score with
Aeriyle's first strike following exciting end-to-end attacking play during which
both teams had opportunities to find the net.
The ejection of Jonuzi
following a second bookable offence changed the complexion of the even contest
and after 61 minutes Aeriyle made it 2-1. Just four minutes later Pedro Dias put
Toronto Supra in control by making it 3-1. Supra's Ryan Gamble came close just
minutes later, then after 82 minutes Aeriyle gave the Toronto team an insurance
goal and out of reach for the 4-1 win.
"Our plan worked very well,"
explained an elated Dr. Cesar Garcia, coach of Toronto Supra who doubles up as
the team doctor while having a family practice in Toronto's west end. "The
midfield did its job perfectly and Samuel certainly knows how to score as one of
our two strikers kept up front--it was just a matter of time."
Jurek
Gebczynski, coach of London City, attributed the difference to age after having
fielded a number of young players against a tough seasoned Toronto Supra squad.
"We took the game to them for a while, but
eventually a more mature Toronto
team wore down our younger players," he said. City's Tyler Hemming at 16 is the
youngest player in the CPSL.
In addition to the two yellow cards and then
a red shown to Jonuzi, London picked up two more yellows and two also were shown
to the visiting Supra.
