Canada vs USA U-19 Women's team result
by Rocket Robin

Details of the International Friendly played Saturday June 30th, 2001 between the Under 19 Women's teams of Canada and the United States at Varsity Stadium in Toronto at 4:30pm. (before the National team game)

47 min...US GOAL Mary Boland...Boland breaks through Canadian defense after getting through pass on right and scores on 12 yard shot over goalie Erin McLeod trying to cut her angle. An US forward would have tucked in any rebound or a pass across across box.

Final Score....Canada U-19....0.....United States....1...

Canadian team captain was goalkeeper Erin McLeod and played the role of Rene Higitu/Jorge Campos acting like a defender outside the box to race for through balls through the Canadian defense but fortunately got away with it.

The US strategy was to pass behind the Canadian defense even on long balls and for their forwards to charge ahead...hey it worked a few times when not getting caught in offside traps.

Canadian strategy seemed to be to pass to the four US defenders hoping a Canadian forward would be there.

Best Canadian on the field was midfielder Candace Chapman of the Toronto Inferno who often deked a midfielder or two before feeding in a pass. The Inferno deserve more than 150 fans per game!

The game could have gone either way but the US came away with a fair result in a game with few clearcut chances.
