Toronto
ends regular season with win over
Atlanta
CLARKSTON, Ga. (CP) --
Aaron Benjamin scored the winner in the 78th minute as
the Toronto Lynx ended
their A-League regular season with a 2-1 win over the Atlanta
Silverbacks on
Monday night.
The Lynx will go on the road to meet the Long Island
Rough Riders in the first round
of the playoffs next weekend.
The loss spoiled Atlanta's playoff hopes, as the Silverbacks
needed a win to move
past Raleigh for the last playoff spot in the Eastern
Conference.
Following a scoreless first half, Lynx midfielder
Nikola Vignjevic opened the scoring
in the 63rd minute with a goal on a free
kick from 25 yards.
Atlanta tied the game on a goal by Brian
Piesner in the 70th.
Lynx forward Aaron Benjamin slotted the
winner in the 78th following a free kick by
defender Mauricio Vincello.
Toronto was last in the A-League playoffs in 1997, the team's
inaugural year, and was
eliminated in the first round.
