Lynx Squander Another One - Succesful Homecoming For
DeRosario
by David Bailey (Canada Kicks)
Toronto: Toronto native and former Lynx Dwayne DeRosario scored the
only goal of the game as the Richmond Kickers defeated the Toronto Lynx in front
of an announced crowd of 2,480 at Varsity Stadium.
The game had been a
moribund affair until the 79th minute when Robert Ukrop Jr. sent a short pass to
a wide open DeRosario.
The Canadian international broke in alone on Lynx
keeper Theo Zagar and fired an overpowering rocket of a shot that Zagar was
unable to stop despite making contact with the ball.
The goal finally
woke the Lynx up and in the 84th minute, David Diplacido fired a low hard shot
that would have squeaked inside the post if it were not for an excellent diving
save by Richmond keeper Michael McGinty.
The Lynx continued to threaten
and it was only the crossbar that stopped Diplacido from bringing the score
level in the 90th minute.
Despite Montreal's five point victory over the
US Pro-40's, Toronto holds on to third place in the A-League's North-East
division by a single point.
In order for Montreal to make the play-offs,
they must defeat Rochester next Saturday in the final game of their seasion plus
hope for assistance from the US Pro-40's, Long Island and Atlanta all of whom
face the Lynx in the next week.
Notes: Lyndon Hooper was back in the
line-up from injury and played a solid game in midfield ..... Milan Kojic was
sitting out the first game of a two game suspension for accumulated yellow cards
..... after the match, DeRosario was mobbed on the field by a crowd of relatives
and friends. The goal was his 15th of the season ..... for the second game in a
row, Lloyd Barker was the best Lynx on the field ..... even if Montreal can come
away with a five point victory over the Rhino's next Saturday, the Lynx will
need to garner only five points in their final three games, two of which are at
home, in order to solidify third place and a guaranteed play-off spot ..... in
the race for the two wild card play-off positions in the Eastern Conference, the
Impact could squeak into post season play with a five point win win over
Rochester if the Atlanta Silverbacks are unable to take any points from their
final two games of the season.
