TORONTO--Juan Pablo Arango scored
both goals as the Toronto Lynx defeated the Boston Bulldogs 2-1
Saturday before 2,711 at Varsity Stadium.
In the 30th minute,
Arango drove a short shot past 'keeper Russell Payne to make the
score 1-0. After sending a 38th-minute attempt wide of the net,
Arango wrapped up the win two minutes before halftime, off the
rebound after Payne blocked a 15-yarder from Francisco Dos
Santos.
The Bulldogs managed only six shots, but mounted an
offensive flurry in the 56th minute. Valmir Gama hit the post and
the ball caromed into a crowd at the goalmouth. Defender Adrian
Serioux eventually cleared the ball off the line and out of
danger.
The Lynx weren't as lucky during a 90th-minute
goalmouth scramble. Lloyd Barker was whistled fro handling a Boston
shot, and Sullivan Phillips - the only substitute available to the
undermanned Bulldogs - spoiled Theo Zagar's shutout with a penalty
kick.
