MONTREAL--The slumping Montreal
Impact played the A-League's hottest team, the Toronto Lynx, to a
1-1 tie Friday before 1,634 at Claude Robillard Stadium.
The
Lynx, who had won six straight coming into Friday's game and are
unbeaten in eight games since the start of the season, took the
early advantage with a 22nd-minute goal by forward Arango Juan. Team
scoring leader Francisco Dos Santos picked up his second assist of
the year on the
play, passing off to Juan near midfield. Juan
dribbled down the right side
then cut into the box and beat
netminder Peter Zaratin from just inside the
right corner,
banking a shot off the inside of the post.
Montreal's Darko
Kolic came up with a pair of dangerous first-half chances,
but
neither shot made it through 'keeper Theo Zagar. Mauro Biello
finally
knotted the score in the 66th minute, seven minutes after
the Impact had
lost veteran midfielder Nick DeSantis to a red
card for serious foul play.
The 35-yard shot slipped und the
crossbar at the center of the goal.
The 71st-minute ejection
of Toronto defender Brian Ashton, who took down
Darko Kolic from
behind, left the teams even at 10 men each. Zaratin almost
got
caught by Dos Santos' 50-yard lob in the first overtime, but
scrambled
back in time to parry the ball over the bar. The
scenario was repeated on
the other end of the field, with Zagar
hustling to knock away a 35-yard
attempt from Montreal's Patrice
Bernier.
Zaratin came up with three saves in the second half
and three more in
overtime to salvage the tie and help the Impact
snap a three-game losing streak.
