St. Catharines advance to League Cup Semi-Finals, Shooters still in playoff hunt
St. Catharines Roma Wolves advanced to the CPSL League Cup semi-finals last night holding London City to a 1-1 draw at Club Roma.

Genijan Dervishi opened the scoring for London City at the 29th minute.  St. Catharines equalized two minutes later on a goal by Gary Hughes.  London who lost the first game at home 3-2 were eliminated on points.  A team receives three points for a win and one for a tie.  St. Catharines now face the Glen Shields Sun Devils at Birchmount Stadium Friday, September 22nd, kick-off time is 9:00 p.m.

In other semi-final action Toronto Croatia will meet the winner of the Toronto Olympians and York Region Shooters.  Olympians won the first game of that leg 4-0, so the likelihood of last years' finalists meeting in this years semi-final is high.

Willy Giummarra hits for two
In CPSL regular season play, York Region Shooters kept their playoff hopes alive beating the North York Astros 2-0 at Richmond Green.

The score was tied 0-0 at the half with the Astros having a slight edge in the play and creating more scoring opportunities.  In the second half, Willy Giummarra scored his first at the 48th minute making a nice solo run through midfield and hitting a tremendous shot from outside the penalty area that beat Astros' goalie Petre Libicz cleanly.

Astros who thought they had tied it up at the 58 minute mark on a goal by Alex Nardi were disappointed only to see the goal called back for an offside infringement.  Giummarra scored his second of the match on a rather unusual play with the Astros defence tight and flatfooted just inside their own half.  Giummarra raced in and intercepted the ball and scored into an open net from 55 yards out.

This weekends match ups
All eight teams are in action this weekend and with no teams currently mathematically eliminated from the playoffs it should be an interesting CPSL weekend.  Olympians host St. Catharines at Birchmount which could turn out to be for the League Championship.  York Region Shooters will be looking for back to back wins to keep their playoff hopes alive as they host London City.

Glen Shields Sun Devils travel to Ester Shiner to take on the Astros.  A victory by Glen Shields could guarantee them a place in the Primus Cup playoffs, a win by the Astros keeps their hopes alive with three games left to play.

In Oshawa it will be the Flames against Toronto Croatia.  Croatia has secured third place in the League Standings and will compete in two post season championships.  A win by the Flames and a Glen Shields loss could make the final two weeks in the CPSL very interesting.
