Toronto Croatia, St. Catharines Roma Wolves, tie one on at Centennial
In a match last night that could have given some breathing room for the victor, Toronto Croatia and St. Catharines Roma Wolves battled to a 0-0 tie.  This result kept Toronto Croatia on top of Group B, tied on points with Roma, but ahead on goal difference.

Both goalkeepers put in solid performances.  Dino Perri was called on early in the game to make some fine saves, but it was obvious Croatia missed their top striker Leo Marasovic who is in Croatia on a pro soccer trail.

In the second half St. Catharines Roma Wolves had numerous opportunities to wrap it up but goalkeeper George Azcurra kept them off the score sheet.  St. Catharines Roma Wolves had their best scoring opportunity at the 78th minute when Jerry Cipriani made an excellent run down the left flank.  His cross into the penalty area had clearly beaten Azcurra, and Pat Dugas blasted a shot wide of the open net.  The match was well contested by both teams and featured 7 yellow cards.

The CPSL League Cup has now reached the half way point with each team playing three games, and still no teams have been mathematically eliminated or no teams have secured that vital first place position that will allow them automatic entry into the semi-finals scheduled for Birchmount Stadium on Friday, September 22nd.  Kick-off times are 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.  This situation makes this CPSL weekend games very crucial.

On Friday night London City hosts Oshawa Flames.  A win by city who are always tough to beat at home could guarantee them a position in the next round.  A win by Oshawa could move them into second place in Group A.

On Sunday three matches take place.  Toronto Olympians are in a must win situation at home to Oshawa Flames.  A win by Oshawa could all but eliminate the defending champions.

In Group B action York Region Shooters will be looking for their second win in Cup play when they host Toronto Croatia.  Across town North York Astros will take on visiting St. Catharines Roma Wolves.  A win by the Astros could create a real log jam in the standings.  It's going to be an exciting weekend of CPSL action and come Monday morning the picture may be a little clearer on what teams advance and what teams are out of the Cup.
