Toronto Croatia
The CPSL League Cup
kicked off this weekend with a huge upset. At Civic Stadium in
Oshawa, the Flames handed the Olympians their first loss of the season
with a 3-2 win.
Oshawa Flames opened the scoring at the 6th minute mark on a goal by Jimmy Kuzmanoski. Guz Kouzmanis equalized at the 34th minute only to see David Kohek of the Flames score 5 minutes later to give the Flames a 2-1 lead at half time. Oshawa continued to pressure and went up 3-1 on Omar El-Behairy's first goal of the season. Olympians narrowed the margin at the 76th minute on a fine goal by Danny Sanna and dominated in the last 20 minutes, but were unable to get that tying goal. With the victory, Oshawa goes on top of Group A in League Cup play.
In other Group A action, London City travelled to Dufferin Clark to take on the Sun Devils. London City struck first on a nice goal by captain Jurek Gebczynski, Marrco Antonucci equalized 7 minutes later and the score remained 1-1.
In Group B, Astros were unfortunate not to come away with 3 points as they dominated play. Astros controlled the flow of the game and shut down Croatia's explosive attack and, with only 2 minutes to go, Astros striker Felipe Periras header hit the cross bar and Croatia escaped with a point.
In regular League play, St. Catharines Roma Wolves continued its winning ways and edged out the Shooters 3-2 at Richmond Green. The victory moved St. Catharines into a second place tie with Toronto Olympians.
Andy McKey opened the scoring for Roma at the 16th minute mark and Jerry Cipriani scored for the Wolves at the 26th and 33rd minute marks. With St. Catharines using all of its substitutes, then losing one player due to injury at the 75th minute, they were forced to play with 10 men. Shooters took advantage of the extra man and scored twice in the last ten minutes.
