Newcomer Martin Nash opened the scoring in the 11th
minute when his pass to forward Jimmy Glenn found its way back to
the foot of Nash, who punched a shot past Bulldogs goalkeeper
Russell Payne. In the 18th minute Rochester upped its lead to 2-0
when Nate Daligcon crossed a ball from the left side to Nash who
headed it into the upper half of the net. The Rhinos made it 3-0
before the half when Onandi Lowe went high above two Boston
defenders to bury a header and give Rochester the win.

In a game that doubled as a U.S. Open Cup
qualifier, the Minnesota Thunder won their 17th straight game and
swept their second straight back-to-back weekend series, with a 2-1
victory over the Milwaukee Rampage at Uihlein Soccer Park. The score
also marked the 15th time in the last 16 regular season games
between the two teams that the game had been decided by just one
goal. In a back and forth first half, Minnesota finally broke
through in the 39th minute, when midfielder Stoian Mladenov picked
off a bad clear at midfield. He proceeded to loft a ball over two
Rampage defenders to an on-rushing Luis Labastida. The Thunder
midfielder then chipped the ball from 24 yards out over Rampage
goalkeeper Dan Popik, who was racing out to intercept the pass. The
Rampage and Thunder both had quality scoring opportunities in the
first half but Labastida’s goal was the lone tally. Rampage forward
Digital Takawira had a chance early in the half, when Nate Houser’s
shot deflected off a Thunder defender in the box. Takawira, however,
couldn’t get his foot to the ball and Thunder ‘keeper John Swallen
covered up. Labastida had a chance to put the Thunder in the lead
earlier in the game, when his right-footed shot hit the near post
from 22 yards away in the 29th minute. The ball rebounded back into
the hands of Popik. The teams played an even second half until
Labastida made a run down the right side in the 62nd minute. He sent
a cross to a wide open Brian Winters, who beat Popik with a far post
shot from 16 yards away. Minnesota led 2-0 at that point. The game
remained 2-0 until the Rampage earned a corner kick in the 90th
minute of the game. Midfielder Jason Willan sent in a cross and
defender Alen Soso headed the ball off a Thunder defender and into
the goal from six yards out. |

Three different Flash players scored and Tom Tate
managed a shutout for the win. Connecticut, playing its fifth
consecutive road match to start the season, put in a solid effort in
the first half to keep the match close. San Diego had not scored a
first-half goal at home this season until defender Jamie Munro
tallied a marker in stoppage time. Munro pounced on a rebound in
front of the goal and tapped in a four-yard ground shot for the
goal. Wolves goalkeeper David Winner made the initial two saves on
Flash shots, but could not get back in position to save Munro’s
effort. The Flash opened the second half with a flurry, which
resulted in the club’s second goal. Guillermo Jara notched his first
Flash goal in the 47th minute with a nine-yard shot that beat
Winner. Jara was the benefactor of a great 20-yard run down the
right side by Carlos Farias, who then crossed the ball to Jara’s
feet inside the box. Farias now has a two-game assist/point streak.
Adam Frye, on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, scored the important
bonus goal in the 64th minute. Frye, who has scored a goal in two of
three matches with the team, struck a 22-yard rocket shot into the
upper portion of the goal. Leighton O’Brien had the helper with a
long pass from the right of the center circle. San Diego is now 23-0
lifetime when scoring three or more goals in a contest and is 36-0
when leading at the 75-minute mark. Tom Tate recorded his second
straight shutout in goal for San Diego and improves his record to
3-0-0. |

The Wildcats moved to 2-2 and the Bulldogs dropped
to 1-5 after a hard fought battle at Hersheypark Stadium.
After an even opening period, the game needed a goal and that came
for the home side 10 minutes into the second half when Cesidio
Colasante broke down the right wing and crossed a near post ball
that was flicked on by Greg Simmonds for the onrushing Jamel
Mitchell to volley home from eight yards. Boston threatened on the
break and Pinto got behind the Hershey defense late in the half only
to shoot straight at goalkeeper Mike LaBerge. Hershey had to make
two substitutions due to injury with both Kyle Swords and Ray
Goodlett going down in the back for the home team. The re-arranged
Wildcats opened the second half brightly and when Mitchell broke
through the offside trap, Boston 'keeper Russell Payne did well
to force the Hershey forward to a wide angle and narrow down his
shot. Payne was helpless minutes later when a far post cross was
headed bcak across the goal by Colasante and Mitchell drove home a
header from six yards out for his second goal of the game in the
62nd minute. The Wildcats had little time to enjoy their two-goal
lead, however, as Boston immediately threw players forward and a
poor clearance from the Hershey defense was picked up by Ebbie
Kodiat, who chested the ball down and volleyed past LeBerge with a
dipping shot in the 63rd minute. As Boston pushed for the equalizer
Hershey put their game out of reach in the 74th minute. A free kick
40 yards out was played quickly by Matthew Ford into the path of
Mike Feniger who timed his run to perfection and slotted the ball
past the onrushing 'keeper from 10 yards. LaBerge made some fine
saves toward the end as Boston pressured and Hershey broke twice in
the closing stages. The first time saw Ford's header come back off
the post and in the final minute Neil Ryan pulled back Mike Feniger
who had only the 'keeper to beat. The referee ejected Ryan for a
professional foul. |

The Rhythm gained a major edge in U.S. Open Cup

Battle Ground Academy Stadium in Franklin, Tenn. Midfielder Doug
Schenkel had a goal and an assist, while the Rhythm also got goals
from midfielder Danny Rebuck and rookie forwards Jeremy Fedor and
Jeremy McClure to improve their record to 2-2 (nine points). It was
the season opener for the Riverhawks, whose lone goal came in the
second half from Bobo Bokole off a rebound from a shot by defender
Brett Strang after the Rhythm had already gained a 3-0 lead. The
teams meet again next weekend when in Cincinnati, with the
Riverhawks needing to score at least four goals to advance to gain
entry into the Open Cup. |

Sheldon Thomas and Steve Patterson each scored a
goal and added an assist, as the Waves cruised to a 4-1 win over the
Wolves late Sunday night in Santa Ana, California. In a first half
which started out evenly played, Nick Theslof headed home a Thomas
pass in the 20th minute. Six minutes later, Thomas made it 2-0
off a feed from Shawn Saunders. Wolves head coach Dan Gaspar made
four substitutions to start the second half, bringing in Sean
Duzant, Brendan Sullivan, Wikid Wilson and Dan Rudolph to shake
things up. Connecticut cut the deficit in half in the 78th
minute, when Sean Nealis slammed home a loose ball from nine yards
out after a corner kick. But whatever momentum the Wolves
built came to a screaching halt when Steve Patterson scored in the
83rd minute and assisted on Colby Jackson’s goal in stoppage time.
With the win, Orange County improves to 5-4, while Connecticut falls
to 0-5-1. |
